North Coast Toastmasters
Meetings
We warmly welcome guests to attend the weekly meetings of North Coast Toastmasters. When you do so, you will participate
in a unique experience -- an educational and self-improvement program mixed with a generous portion of fun and
fellowship to develop the art of public speaking and effective communication. We are happy to have you share this
meeting with us. The following is a brief explanation of the main segments of our meeting.
Ah Counter, Grammarian,
Timer: These functions
are designed to help members improve specific speaking skills such as eliminating crutch words (i.e., uhs, ums,
ahs, etc.) that litter our language; listening for elegant, creative words and phrases, as well as grammatical
mistakes; and making sure members speak within their alloted time so everyone has a chance to speak - AND - we
end the meeting on time.
Toastmaster: The Toastmaster is the emcee of the meeting.
Their job is to run the meeting efficiently by introducing meeting participants, warming up the audience with comments
on our "theme" of the week, and by ensuring that the meeting runs on time. This duty is assigned to a
different person for each meeting.
Table Topics: The Table Topics Master will, at random,
call on members to discuss questions related to the theme of the week. The emphasis in this segment of our meeting
is on impromptu speaking (no prior preparation) and on speaking within a strict time frame (30 seconds to one minute).
Table Topics are fun, and you are invited to take part if you would like, however only if you like, you can simply
observe. |

Formal Speeches: The Toastmaster will introduce the speakers.
They will be fulfilling specific speech assignments from the Toastmasters' Communications Manual (referred to as
the "basic manual") or from an advanced manual. Speeches can be about any topic members wish to talk
about, with focus on developing particular skills,( i.e., vocal variety, using props, body language, speech organization,
etc.).

Evaluations: Each speech will be evaluated. Evaluators will point out effective and ineffective aspects
of the speaker's general delivery, items that merit special recognition, and make specific suggestions for improvement.
The goal of evaluations is to maintain the positive, supportive, growth-oriented perspective for which Toastmasters
is so well known. |
